My background

My father being an avid skier, I started skiing as a child in Japan . After my family moved to UK in 1991, we skied at different resorts in Europe .

I came to Whistler on holiday in 2001, took up snowboarding and decided to make Whistler my permanent home.

Ski and snowboard instructing has taken me to 3 different countries. Breckenridge in USA and Mt. Buller in Australia being the other 2 resorts I have taught at.

The training I received at all 3 resorts has made me become a better instructor.

How I teach

I like to help my clients get down the mountain as efficiently as possible, so that they have enough energy to make most of their vacation while exploring the 8000 plus acres that our resort has to offer.

Keeping it simple is important. I like to help my students draw from their everyday experiences to get a better understanding of the skills that are being worked on.

Once the students have an understanding, there is a lot of guided mileage (actual skiing/snowboarding) with feedback verbally and also using video analysis.

The training cycle never really ends once the students are comfortable with one skill, we will start working on another. This all happens while the students are discovering new terrain.

I like to teach beginners and help them overcome their early holiday jitters sliding on snow.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have been paired with Ko whose easy and relaxed style and quiet confidence were a perfect match for my lack of skill and level of nerves. Ko was so patient with me and kept me feeling safe from the start, and by the time we left Whistler this week, I was comfortably linking my wide turns down blue runs and working at bringing my turns a little tighter and getting more confident on the steeper parts of the runs!”

- Dr. Bernstein, USA

My teaching Philosophy

I have been in Whistler for the eleven years and consider Whistler to be my permanent home.

I teach all levels of skiers and specialize in teaching skiers who are eager to get to the next level and want to explore more terrain. I believe it is in all of us to do more. Whether its building up the confidence to try a harder green run, getting off the groomed and trying the powder or refining your skills so that you can master the steeps and bowls, we can do it together.

Because I went through the learning process myself not that long ago I realize how stressful and unnerving skiing can be to those just starting. As a result I have evolved my teaching to be as simple and as fun as possible. To me skiing is a form of mountain travel, we're just traveling from one spot in the mountains to another.

Ultimately its all about having fun.

How I teach

To me teaching skiing is like putting a  puzzle together. We start with the pieces on the outside first and then gradually work our way to the inside. The same way you would put a puzzle together. In this way I can try to keep things simple and easy to understand.

Skiing is a very technical sport and while I can be very technical I prefer to take an approach that makes it as simple as possible.

At the end of the day skiing is supposed to be fun. Let's face it, really all we are doing is going for a big play out on the mountain!

Skiing is about freedom, the freedom to go anywhere you want. Skiing is a form of mountain travel and the more skills and confidence you have the more places you can go. There is no such a thing as the perfect turn just as there is no right or wrong way to ski. There is however a better way that lets us explore more of the mountains, feeling better about ourselves and using less energy. Let me show you that way.

"Dear Chris,

Just to say thank you for your skill and patience in getting the Wace family skiing.  We really appreciated your calm, friendly manner and help with the whole exercise.  It was meant to be fun and it was, thanks in large part to your good self."

- Jos, Maya, Junshi and Perseus Wace, UK
